Every year the Elks organization donates millions of dollars to various charitable causes. I.E., Elks is the second largest donor of scholarships. second only to the federal government. Elks charitable programs can be viewed here.
The last time our local Elks lodge sponsored this horse racing activity, the proceeds were used to supply school supplies and clothing to local foster children as well as to purchase a potential life saving Phillips HeartSmart Defibrillator for the lodge. Most of this year’s proceeds will likely be used to make overdue improvements to the lodge which will help the lodge continue with their charitable programs and grants.
Making a reservation:
Sold Out / Reservations Are Closed
When making your reservation, please list the names of anyone you wish to be seated with in the (Notes) section of the electronic reservation system.
Please note that because alcoholic beverages will be available during the Evening at the Races; we must regrettably restrict attendance to this event to 21 years and older. Since this is an event where the proceeds are charity related, no outside alcoholic beverages are allowed.
When you arrive; you’ll receive a Racing Program with a plastic pocket containing $2,000 in script money. You’ll be able to use your script money to bet on any combination of six horses in six heats. Additional script money will be available for purchase of $20 in real money for $2,000 in script money.
A grid pattern will be taped off on the lodge floor. Volunteers will stand in this grid pattern. These volunteer racers will progress along the grid through a process of rolling large foam rubber dice to determine which horse will cross the finish line first.
Of course, you won’t be able to win any actual money but you can win bragging rights! We’ll even give prizes and winners certificates to every winning horse and the top three winners of script money to cement those bragging rights. Since proceeds support Elks’ projects; everyone will end the evening a winner.

All winnings must be reconciled before the start of the next racing heat. You will not be able to collect on any winning bets after the start of the next heat.
In the event that your winnings in script money are considerable, you will likely be paid with a voucher instead of with script money. The voucher can still be used to bet on horses in exactly the same way as the script money.

Join in the fun of this interactive cocktail making class at the Gold Bar Distillery located inside what used to be the Pan-American terminal for the China Clipper airplanes.
This one-of-a-kind experience includes a guided whiskey tasting, hands-on instruction in creating three signature cocktails, and a peek into the hidden history of Treasure Island, all under the backdrop of the San Francisco skyline.
Website – GoldBarWhiskey.com
The Interactive Cocktail Class is held at the Gold Bar headquarters located in the old Pan-American Airlines Terminal on Treasure Island. That terminal and the original two Pan-American airplane hangers are shown in the photo above.
Treasure Island is a man-made island that was constructed for the Golden Gate International Exposition which opened in February 1939. From the beginning the intention was to convert Treasure Island into an airport at the conclusion of the Exposition.
By then airplanes required longer runways with the exception of the newly developed Pan-American China Clippers which were amphibious. The Pan-American China Clippers as shown below, flew from Treasure Island to Hong Kong with refueling stops at Honolulu, Midway Island, Wake Island, Guam, and Manila from 1939 to 1945.

At a cost of $2,000 for a one-way ticket, all 74 passenger seats were first-class with seats that converted to bunk beds. Even private bedrooms were available.
In 1945 the US Navy established Treasure Island as a naval base through 1997. Now Treasure Island consists of beautiful housing developments surrounded by spacious parks. More of this fascinating history can be viewed at the Treasure Island Museum which is located directly across from the Gold Bar Distillery where the Interactive Cocktail Class will be conducted.
This one-of-a-kind mixology experience includes a guided whiskey tasting, hands-on instruction in creating three signature cocktails, and a peek into the hidden history of treasure Island, all under the backdrop of the San Francisco skyline.
Your $150 voucher can be used for food and beverages where the menu items are named after Pan Am related airplanes.
You will also receive (A Small Fortune) of six 50 mL Gold Bar ingots of whiskey pictured below, one for each of the six participants in the Interactive Cocktail Class.

Jon Thompson limits his Luchaes to editions of 25. He has introduced this special limited edition 1 of 3 for charities, making this piece even more valuable. It has won several awards including Tahoe Quarterly Magazine’s 2024 Best of Tahoe Photo Contest. The issue of Tahoe Quarterly highlighting this award is included with this item. Elemental Alignment is presently on display at Jon Thompson’s Twilight and Rust Gallery in South Lake Tahoe where it has a retail price of $4,500.00.
The Process:
The photograph, Elemental Alignment, is a blending of a new technology with an extraordinary talent that happened at just the right moment.
The technology is a new medium called Luchae in which the photograph is backlit in such a way as to replace the light that was lost when the photograph was reduced to two dimensions. The result is an image that looks so vibrant and so real, one feels like one is looking through a window at the actual scene.
The other half of this equation is the extraordinarily talented photographer, Jonathan Thompson, who for years dreamed of photographing Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe when the vibrant colors of fall mixed just right with a fresh coat of snow. He had nearly given up on the idea when the opportunity finally arose on November 9, 2020. “It was a magical scene to see in person,” said Thompson, who calls this image Elemental Alignment. “I could not believe the collision of seasons had finally happened!”
Jon Thompson owns a beautiful photographic gallery in South Lake Tahoe, Twilight and Rust, in which he displays many of his beautiful photographs in the Luchae medium. Jon has donated Elemental Alignment to the Elks Evening at the Races as a way to support Elks charities.

Imagine the delight of sipping the original champagne developed by Madame Clicquot, as you celebrate with elegance and a touch of history that elevates every moment.
This Veuve Clicquot champagne auction package has a history dating back to when Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot transformed the world of sparkling wine in the early 19th century. Widowed at just 27 and left with a young daughter to raise and a struggling wine business in the middle of the Napoleonic wars, she was strongly encouraged to sell her late husband’s vineyard.
Instead, she convinced her skeptical father-in-law to let her manage the struggling vineyard. At that time Madame Clicquot and her late husband had been trying to develop a sparkling wine. The problem was that the yeast sediment in the sparkling wine gave the wine a muddy cloudy look that made the wine unsellable.
Madame Clicquot found the solution by punching holes into her kitchen table to hold the bottles at an angle, slowly twisting and tilting them so that the sediment collected near the cork. This process, called riddling, made the sparkling wine brilliantly clear which came to be known as Champagne. More than 200 years later all manufacturers of champagne use the same riddling process although today the process is more automated.
Not content to rest on her laurels, Madame Clicquot went on to develop the first vintage champagne in 1810. During the Napoleonic wars she smuggled her champagne past blockades to Russia.
Madame Clicquot died in 1866 but left behind not just a successful business but an entire industry shaped by her innovations. Her champagne continues to sell well to this day. The fascinating story of Madame Clicquot’s success was made into a movie titled Widow Clicquot which can be viewed on Netflix.

Ravenswood was built by Christopher A. Buckley Sr., known as the “Blind Boss” of San Francisco politics in the 1870s and 1880s. While it served as a summer home for the Buckley family from 1885 to 1920, it was also one of the larger early vineyards in the Livermore Valley, with 100 acres in grapes and winery production of 500,000 gallons per year. In 1931, the estate was acquired by a Catholic order, the Redemptorist Fathers.
Called “Villa San Clemente” by the priests, Ravenswood served as their religious retreat for more than 30 years. In 1968, Ravenswood was purchased by developer Masud Mehran, who gave the core 32.6 acres to be used as a park. The 1891 Main House and 1885 Tank House were restored by the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD) in 1979. The 1885 Cottage was restored in 1986. Ravenswood is on the National Register of Historic Places, is a State of California Historical Point of Interest, and is a City of Livermore Historic Preservation Landmark Site. Free public tours are given by costumed docents on the second and fourth Sundays of each month (except the fourth Sunday in December), from noon to 4 p.m. Two annual community events are held at Ravenswood: the Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social on the second Sunday in August and the Victorian Yuletide on the second Sunday in December.

And, if you get pulled over for erratic driving, you’ll get to assure the officer, it’s not the wine—just your lousy driving skills! Cheers to hangover-free fun!”
